High field magneto-absorption investigations of exciton states in PbI2

Abstract Magneto-absorption studies of the band edge exciton lines in PbI 2 up to 18 T are reported. A lower limit for the excitonic Rydberg R ∗ of 180 meV on an isotropic model is deduced from the measurements. This is in contradiction to several previous interpretations of the exciton series, but is reasonably consistent with the interpretation first proposed by Nikitine et al. with R ∗ = 140 meV .
