Revision Total Ankle Replacement

2020
Within the last decade, total ankle arthroplasty has emerged as an acceptable alternative in the treatment of severe tibiotalar arthritis. However, component subsidence after total ankle arthroplasty has been an issue and remains the most common indication for revision total ankle replacement. The management of bone loss and alteration in the ankle joint center of rotation is challenging following component subsidence. Historically, salvage of a failed total ankle arthroplasty involved either ankle arthrodesis or amputation. As implant technology and surgical techniques improve, revision arthroplasty has become an emerging surgical alternative.
