An Equivalent Model of the Paralleled Modular ANPC Converter with a Decoupled DC Link for Real-Time Simulation

2021
In this paper, a switching function based-equivalent model of the paralleled modular active-neutral-point (PM-ANPC) multilevel converter with decoupled DC link is proposed. The development of this equivalent model is motivated by desire to perform hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tests of a battery charger based on the PM-ANPC and by the stringent computational requirements of real-time simulation. Consequently, the power semiconductors are replaced with voltage sources controlled by switching functions, and this simplified model aims to emulate a reference model based on switching devices. Moreover, the proposed model minimizes errors caused by measurement delays and improves the overall simulation performance. These results are confirmed in Simulink where comparative tests are performed between the equivalent model and the reference model for both offline and real-time simulation. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed model is capable to accurately emulate the reference model while offering improved simulation performance.
