Observation of transverse effects on quantum fluctuations in stimulated Raman scattering

Abstract Measurements of the quantum fluctuations in transient stimulated Raman scattering are reported. The fluctuations of the Stokes pulse energy depend strongly on the Fresnel number F of the sample: the fluctuations diminish with increasing F . A simple qualitative explanation for this F -dependence is proposed.
