PENETRATION OF NUCLEAR RADIATION INTO SHAFTS, TUNNELS AND ENTRANCEWAYS

Abstract : It is important to designers of shelters to be able to determine the amount of radiation from a nuclear weapon detonation that penetrates shafts, tunnels and entranceways of the shelter. In this report, existing procedures available to designers are discussed, and a comparison is made between calculated results with those determined experimentally. This comparison clearly indicates that the agreement between experiment and calculation is not as close as is desirable. It is noted that consistent and complete laboratory experiments have not been undertaken for the purpose of determining transmission characteristics of radiation (gamma and neutron) from a nuclear weapon into tunnels with standardized cross sections, bends and intersections.
