The present invention provides a method of controlling an engine, when the operation of the cooler fouling / plugging conditions (e.g. during idling, start, exhaust gas heating system and DPF regeneration at or below the corresponding threshold value or the temperature of the EGR gas in the EGR cryogenic coolant temperature other post below the respective threshold when the injection operation) of the EGR cooler bypass valve to control the transfer of at least part of the EGR flow bypasses the EGR cooler. When the temperature in the fuel is lower than the condensation temperature of the EGR system, the method of the present invention to reduce exhaust of unburned or partially burned fuel contains a high concentration through the EGR cooler. Advantage of the present invention is that the performance of the EGR cooler can be maintained without providing an oxidation catalyst and / or a diesel particulate filter in the EGR conduit.
