Att knyta samman staden kring barriärer : stadsutveckling i Södra Kirseberg/Östervärn

The planning of new districts in Malmo comes with certain challenges. Possible areas for new housing developments are limited, which forces Malmo municipality to transform areas like Sodra Kirseberg/Ostervarn. This area is dominated by large barriers, such as heavy car and train traffic, but also remains from previous industries. A transformation of the area will help to integrate the north-eastern and central parts of Malmo. The aim of this thesis is to study how Malmo municipality perceives barriers and barrier effects in the planning process of Sodra Kirseberg/ Ostervarn and to analyze how these planned actions could lead to a decrease in barrier effects. A qualitative document analysis and an interview with an official from Malmo municipality are the primary sources, which are analyzed based on conceptions of space. It is concluded that Malmo places great emphasis on physical actions such as new passageways and simplifying mobility by foot or bike in the area. By focusing on re-opening Ostervarn train station and transforming old industries to attractive places for people to meet, trying to transform the area from inaccessible to accessible is vital for the municipality. This however, will take time since the area for long have been seen as a place for traffic and not for people. (Less)
