Advance in Therapies for Rheumatoid Arthritis: New Perspectives

2016
Abstract Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic and systemic inflammatory disease that attacks the joints and other organs, such as blood vessels, skin, and lungs. Different cellular types and inflammatory molecules are involved in the events of joint destruction and pain and are currently the main targets for the management of RA. However, several patients are unresponsive or intolerant to the available treatments. Furthermore, the development of secondary immunosuppression culminates in the high rates of opportunistic infections and malignancies in RA patients. Here, we overview the current therapies for RA and explore new approaches that could be used in the future for the management of RA.
