Venous thromboembolism, clinically occurring as deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, is one of the most common acute cardiovascular syndromes. Heparin and its products are the mainstays in treatment of venous thromboembolism, for more than 50 years. In recent years several new anticoagulants were approved. Its mechanisms of action, advantages and adverse reactions are reviewed in this article.
