Date Jun. 11, 1992.A dietary fibre composition comprising a water-soluble, nononic cellulose ether having a cloud point not higher than 35 DEG C. in combination with a charged surfactant and optional additives in water, the ratio of surfactant to cellulose ether being 1:5 to 1:25 by weight, is a liquid solution at room temperature and a gel in the gastrointestinal tract at body temperature. The dietary fibre composition can be used as a bulk laxative and also as a slimming aid.
