Uterine perforation by intra-uterine contraceptive devices and their laparoscopic removal.

1975
14 cases of uterine perforation by an intrauterine device (IUD) are discussed. It was estimated that perforation occurred within 3 months of insertion in 9 cases. 8 of the patients were pregnant. 13 of the IUDs were successfully removed by laparoscopy while the remaining device was removed by laparotomy because of dense omental adhesions. The value of suturing the tail of the device to the cervix is being evaluated. The reasons for perforation are discussed.
