The paper studies the generation of magnetic fields in a cylindrical cavity of a magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) stirrer, which is a system of coils connected to a three-phase AC power source and generating the traveling and rotating magnetic fields in the cylindrical volume of the stirrer. These fields make it possible to generate eddy currents in the electrically conductive fluid contained in the cavity. The interaction of these fields with the magnetic fields produces a vortex electromagnetic force, which initiates a vortex flow in the conducting liquid. The paper is also concerned with the experimental study of the intensity of electromagnetic forces acting on a solid aluminum cylinders placed in a cylindrical cavity of the MHD stirrer. Aluminum cylinders of different heights are used to model the liquid metal poured in the cavity of the MHD stirrer.
