Carbohydrates of the trypsin soluble fraction of the orb web of Argiope trifasciata

Abstract The trypsin soluble fraction of the orb web of Argiope trifasciata has been analyzed for carbohydrates by gas chromatography of trimethylsilyl derivatives, chemical analysis, and immuno-diffusion. These methods revealed the presence of neutral sugars (1.1–1.5%) and aminohexoses (2.7%). N- acetyl galactosamine was the principal aminosugar (64.2%) and fucose the predominant neutral sugar (28.1%). Lesser quantities of mannose and galactose were observed.
