THE APPLICABILITY OF HEAVY PIPES TO COPE WITH HEAVY LOAD APPLICATIONS

1980
The article reviews specifications for the design of concrete pipes to withstand calculated loadings. The suitability of a pipeline to withstand loads is a function of three elements (a) type of bedding (b) specified pipe crushing strength, and (c) efficiency of installation. Standard beddings have been established which specify various concrete supports or granular beddings, costs for which are considered. Load bearing properties and applications for concrete pipes, in deep-fill construction for depths in excess of 10 M, are discussed with common methods of installation. The paper also mentions the use of such characteristics as strength, permeability and durability in pipe jacking applications. (TRRL)
