The information technology revolution is beginning to affect our patterns of living and working at least as profoundly as did the industrial revolution, only more rapidly. The industrial revolution extended human muscle; the information technology revolution is extending the human mind and nervous system and will do so at almost all levels of human endeavour: from manufacturing industry through service industries, to the new information knowledge industries which it is facilitating, and onto the home and leisure activities (Brotchie et al. 1985).
