2020
Aim: Aging is a natural and insurmountable biological phenomenon, manifesting itself on an individual and population level. Modern European society is facing serious challenges related to demographic change, including the rapid aging of the population. The aim of the article is to consider some features of the aging organism, related to the correct conduct of physiotherapy procedures for "elderly".Material and methods: Articles related to the issue were cited by Google Scholar, Pubmed in Bulgarian and English from 2000 to 2019. Keywords such as "geriatrics", physical therapy "," kinesitherapy "," third age "," third age ", "aging”, “elderly” in various combinations were used. Results: Physical therapy in geriatrics covers a wide range of activities related to normal aging. There are also many conditions, such as osteoarthritis, malignancies, joint replacement, coordination disorders, incontinence, etc., which require special treatment given the age of the patients. The analysis of clinical symptoms should also take into account the age-related changes in the joints and bones of the spine, leading to potential circulatory disorders in some main vessels with special symptoms. Assessment of functional homeostasis can provide a method for identifying vulnerable individuals to apply more intensive treatment strategies, including rehabilitation. Physical therapy aims to maximize the quality of life and rehabilitation potential in the areas of prevention and treatment, covering the physical, psychological, emotional and social well-being of "elderly" people. Conclusion: The aging of the population in modern society raises many problems of different nature, primarily medical and social. The use of common language in communication and the synthesis of knowledge in the field of geriatrics and medical rehabilitation are key to maintaining or improving the functional independence of elderly patients. Rehabilitation of elderly patients can help maintain their functional independence and improve their quality of life. The functional assessment and treatment of each individual patient is best done through a team approach.
