Sultamicillin as single-dose therapy for gonococcal infections in women

1991
A total of 55 patients with clinical and laboratory diagnosis of gonococcal cervicitis were treated with either a single dose or 2.25 gm of sultamicillin alone (group 1) or 2.25 gm sultamicillin + 1 gm probenecid (group 2). A 96% cure rate was observed for 25 patients in group 1 and a complete curve was seen in all 30 of the patients in group 2. Penicillinase-producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae was identified in 34 patient isolates (61.8%) and 33 of 34 patients responded to either treatment regimen. There was no significant difference in patient response to treatment with either regimen. Sultamicillin is effective as a single-dose therapy for the treatment of gonococcal infections in women with infection due to nonpenicillinase-producing and penicillinase-producing N. gonorrhoeae.
