The Relationship between Internet Addiction and Social Development of High School Students in Tehran, Iran

Many users of the Internet and its attractiveness in recent years led to the emergence of a phenomenon known as the "Internet addiction". According to this, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the Internet addiction and social development of adolescents. The method of this study was descriptive-correlation. The populations of this descriptive study were all the students of secondary schools in Tehran, Iran in 2014 academic year. The population was selected 350 students using Krejcie and Morgan table from areas of one, five, eight and twelve by cluster random sampling method. Data were collected using Young internet addiction questionnaire and Witsman social development. The results were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient. Data were analyzed using SPSS software for descriptive and inferential statistics. The results revealed that there was a significant and negative correlation between Internet addiction and social development. Therefore, it can be concluded that Internet addiction is common in adolescents and can prevent their growth.
