Performance of Sustainable Environmentally Friendly Fired Clay Brick by Utilizing Waste Eggshell and Glass Powder

This experimental investigation is aimed to develop environmentally friendly sustainable brick and to utilize the waste such as egg shell and glass in urban and rural parts of many countries like India.  In order to validate the proposed aim, it is planned to prepare, test and analyze, six different mix combinations of sustainable bricks. In this study, Egg shell powder (ESP) of 10% and 15% and Glass powder (GP) of 10%, 15% and 20% is replaced with clay and their performances on physic-mechanical properties are assessed. The density decreases from 0.2% to 2.6% with 10% ESP and porosity decreases from 4.59% to 2.43% with 15% ESP for the bricks containing GP of 10%, 15% and 20% of replacement with clay compared to normal brick. The maximum increase in compressive strength of 34.89% for the combination of 10% ESP and 15% GP and its corresponding reduction in water absorption of 37.z11% is obtained. The performance of GP up to 15% replacement with clay, increases the compressive strength. Hence, it is feasible to produce light weight sustainable bricks by replacing ESP and GP with clay. This sustainable environmentally friendly bricks could possibly reduce the entire dead weight of the building. It leads to the reduction in materials for the foundation of any structure, cost of construction, easy to transport to construction sites and need minimum energy to lift them in multi-storied buildings. Thus the utilization of waste materials not only reduce the landfill but also contributes to the carbon foot print reduction.
