A hydroformylation process comprising the steps of: (a) reacting a conjugated C4 to C20 alkadiene with CO and H2 in the presence of a catalyst composition to form a product comprising at least one alkenal wherein said catalyst composition comprises a Group VIII metal or Group VIII metal compound and at least one phosphonite ligand having a structure:wherein R1, R2 and R3 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, aralkyl of 7 to 15 carbon atoms and aryl of 6 to 10 carbon atoms, and wherein X1 and X2 are independently selected from the group consisting of a direct bond and alkylidene of 1 to 20 carbon atoms; and then (a) recovering at least one alkenal. The process is particularly useful to produce pentenals from butadiene.
