Influence of diethyl ether on exergy and emission characteristics of diesel engine with waste cooking oil methyl ester

2021
This study presents the effect of ‘diethyl ether’ on irreversibilities, which are based on exergy evaluation and emission of waste cooking oil methyl ester fueled “direct-injection-diesel engine.” Testing was conducted on unit cylinder engine, for various load levels (20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%) with speed rate of 1600 rev/min. It is found that DEE significantly could be relevant in reducing NOx emission, irreversibilities and improve exergetic efficiency. For 15% DEE mixing, thermal efficiency is improved from 25.15 to 35.12% at full load; however, the second law efficiency or exergetic efficiency is enhanced from 13.12 to 28.25%. It is found that diethyl ether could reduce smoke opacity effectively. The sustainability index presented that the blending of diethyl ether with waste cooking oil methyl ester could substitute for mineral diesel.
