A Pregnant Pause: Rethinking Economic Evaluation in Contraception and Pregnancy

Abstract Pregnancy presents a unique challenge to economic evaluation, requiring methods that can account for both maternal and fetal outcomes. The ethical challenges to healthcare presented by pregnancy are well understood, but these have not yet been incorporated into cost-effectiveness approaches. Economic evaluations of pregnancy currently take an ad hoc approach to outcome valuation, opening the door to biased estimates and inconsistent resource allocation. We summarize the limitations of current economic evaluation methods and outline key areas for future work.
