Toward reliable virtual-surgery in virtual environments : achievement, challenge and design guidelines
2004
A reliable Virtual Environment (VE) emerging from Virtual Reality (VR) Technology can serve as a significant research tool for the development of bio- informatics particularly in the area of surgical innovations. At present VEs allow the surgeons to experience interactivity, information visualization, movement of surgical instruments and tactical feedback on a Virtual-Human. However, a lot of research is yet to be carried out on the disturbance factors, which affect real-time working in VEs for surgeons. This research describes so far development of Virtual Reality (VR) for Virtual- Surgery, and to introduce a number of new challenges that are being emerged during the development of a real-time interactive virtual environment for surgical purposes. To meet these challenges, this paper explores a variety of design guidelines suggested by the VR experts for creating a better virtual environment according to the current need of human surgery and how to maximize the properties of a VE-Like facility in order to provide an ideal environment for surgical planning, training and education. This maps well to the strong need for distance education, training and planning for multi-surgeons as well. This paper is meant to increase a collaborative and worldwide development effort by individuals and teams that may permit real-time interactive simulations and views for real-time requirements in surgical development.
