A Study on the Relationship between Metacognitive Strategies and English Writing

This article reports an empirical study on the relationship between metacognitive strategies and English writing.Results of the study reveal that the Chinese vocational college students majoring in English use metacognitive strategies more or less in English writing,and most of the students in the survey report an occasional use of the strategies in question.In addition,among the five categories of metacognitive strategies,what the students use comparatively the most is the category of evaluating while the category of selective attention rates the least used.The usage of the categories of self-managing,self-monitoring,goals and plans as well as selective attention,exhibit certain predictive validity in explaining the differences in the students'writing results.Finally,the study also shows some positive relationship between the frequency of overall metacognitive strategy use and the results of English writing.
