The use of InSAR technology to characterize land surface deformation in the Canto do Amaro oilfield, Northeastern Brazil

2019
The Canto do Amaro field is the largest actively producing onshore hydrocarbon reservoir in Brazil, and has been in operation since its discovery in 1985. A total of 30 COSMO-SkyMed SAR images acquired over a period of 15 months were processed for this analysis in order to demonstrate the capabilities of InSAR technology for the monitoring of surface deformation measurementes over an actively producing oil field. Currently, this field is undergoing oil recovery stimulation (EOR) activities with the aim of increasing oil production. For this reason, Petrobras started activities in order to evaluate the use of InSAR technology to identify phenomena of surface movement on the reservoir, resulting from, among other things, fluid injection and hydrocarbon extraction activities.
