PROSPEK PERHUTANAN KLON JATI DI INDONESIA (The Prospect of Teak Clonal Forestry in Indonesia)

2000
Teak (Tectono grandis) is one ofthc best -known and valuable timber species in Indonesia. In Java it has been planted in large areas covering morethan one million ha. Up to now, the planting material still comes from seeds collected mostly from seed production areas and only small portion from clonal seed orchard.Possibilitiesfor vegetativepropagationof goodfenotypematuretreeswereassesedby both conveniional and tissue culture techniques. Nursery experiments on cutting propagation held in Cepu Teak Center indicated that the average cutting cycle was six weeks. Each clone could produce 30 -50 ramets per cutting period or 240 ramets per year. Ifthe spacing between clones in the hedge garden is I by 2 m, it will produce 1200 000 ramets per ha. Concurrently, adapted tissue culture method done hy some private companies have succeeded in producing thousands of good explants which are ready for planting. Such results indicate that clonal propagation can be realrstically applied to improve productivity of teak plantation in Indonesia.
