Effect of incorporation of ajar seed kernel on the performance of crossbred pigs
2004
Dried dehulled ajar (Lagerstroemia flos-reginae) seed kernal (ASK) containing CP 13.8, CF 7.9, EE 1.7, total ash 5.8, NFE, 70.8, Ca 1.3, P 0.4 and tannic acid 1.2%, was incorporated in pig finisher ration by replacing maize (w/w) at 5, 10 and 15% level, to study the effect on growth, nutrient utilization, carcass characteristics and economy of feeding. 24 crossbred (Large White Yorkshire x Hampshire) finisher pigs (34.74 ± 2.47 kg.) divided in 4 equal groups were fed the experimental rations till the animals attained 60 kg body weight. The inclusion of ASK at 15% level showed adverse (P<0.05) effect on growth performance, nutrient utilization, economy of feeding and required more time to attain the target weight. However, no significant effect was observed up to 10% level of inclusion, clearly indicating that ajar seed kernel can be safely incorporated in the ration of finisher pigs, replacing maize up to 10% level.
