Rehabilitation Programs for Drink Drivers - A Critical-Appraisal

2010
Rehabilitation programs for drink drivers have been implemented throughout Australia in an attempt to reduce alcohol related road traffic accidents. Using a rationale proposed by Tugwell et al., the success of rehabilitation programs as a public health measure was assessed. The evaluative literature was reviewed and a survey of ongoing rehabilitation programs in Australia and New Zealand was undertaken. It was concluded that rehabilitation programs for drink drivers should currently be implemented only with caution, since there is a lack of appropriate data about their operation and effectiveness within Australia. Future research needs are discussed.
