June 16, 1976 was a watershed year in the struggle for liberation and democracy in the history of South Africa. The country was plunged into anarchy and chaos, because of the unilateral decision of the apartheid regime to impose the Afrikaans language as a compulsory medium of instruction on the majority African student population.
