Mobile Phones in My Language Classroom: A Cause for Concern or a Source of Communication?

2019
This chapter investigates the ways mobile phones are useful tools in language teaching and learning. However, the distraction caused by students using them for non-classroom activities could be detrimental to the learning experience. Following the Exploratory Practice (EP) principles, the research engaged the students in a joint enterprise to understand the use of mobiles for non-classroom-related activities. A mutual understanding was reached which enhanced the relationship between teacher and learners and improved the class dynamics. It also created a real and meaningful interaction in the target language (Spanish) which boosted students’ oral participation.
