Comparative efficacy of various miticidal drugs against canine scabies.

2010
Many drugs are recommended for treatment of dogs suffering from sarcoptic mange. Comparative therapeutic efficacy of three commonly used drugs was studied. The study was conducted at Veterinary Clinic, CVSc., Hisar. In all these cases itching, alopecia and irritability of varying degree was observed. Inappetence, erythema and keratinization were observed in majority of the dogs. Usually lesions on the skin were large, multiple in number and commonly located on ear, tail, head and face of affected dogs. For therapeutic trials, 18 sarcoptic mange affected dogs were divided into three equal groups. Dogs of the first group given ivermectin second group were sprayed with deltamethrin and third group were treated with flumethrin. Dogs were observed clinically and parasitologically on days 0, 14 and 21 post treatments. The recovery rate was the fastest in dogs which received ivermectin subcutaneously. Flumethrin did not have adequate miticidal effect. The treatment with deltamethrin reduced the severity of clinical symptoms in severe cases and complete recovery was seen only in mild cases.
