The essential metals and their evolution

1980
Living organisms have many different requirements for metals. Some are for small amounts of an ion bound in a specialized site, while others are for ‘bulk’ quantities in solution, at millimolar or greater concentrations. In this chapter we shall start by looking at these requirements, and then consider how they may reflect the course of early biochemical evolution.
