The method comprises the steps that the console obtains information for expanding the disk size of the virtual machine, the information for expanding the disk size comprises an identification label number of the virtual machine and the size of a disk expansion space applied by a virtual machine disk, a disk expansion space is generated in a storage disk according to the size of the disk expansion space applied by the virtual machine disk and on the basis of a preset distribution rule, and the virtual machine needing expansion of the disk size is found according to the analyzed identification label number of the virtual machine; configuration information of the virtual machine is modified and stored according to the property of the disk expansion space, and the disk expansion space of the storage disk is distributed to the disk of the virtual machine. According to the method, on-line extension of the disk size of the virtual machine can be conducted without interrupting an operation system of the virtual machine, and therefore continuity of service of the virtual machine is guaranteed.
