Perspective and challenges for desalination

In the midst of dramatic political events of recent years - the crisis of the Gulf War, revolutionary changes in Eastern Europe and Russia, peace negotiations in the Middle East - one challenge remains: the challenge to «provide people of the world with economical means to obtain pure water through the application of advanced water technologies, desalination and water reuse». The challenge of freshwater and energy needs of today and the 21st cenkry is indeed a most appropriate one in view of approaching water crises resulting from population growth, agricultural and industrial development and pollution, which both limits and destroy's the world's fresh water supply
