Isolation of Phenazine and its Activity Against Root-Knot Nematode, Meloidogyne incognita

2013
An experiment was conducted to isolate the antibiotic, phenazine from the four antagonistic isolates of Pseudomonas fluorescens viz., Pf 128, Pf 223, Pfbv 22 and Pf 1. Rf value of 0.65, 0.67, 0.66 and 0.64 confirmed the production of phenazine from the four isolates. Among them, phenazine extracted from Pf 128 was taken at 50, 40, 25 and 10 per cent concentrations to test its antimicrobial activity against root knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita in vitro. Among different concentrations tested, 50 per cent concentration was found to be very effective in the suppression of egg hatching (8.25 juveniles/egg mass) and enhancing juvenile mortality (92.5%) of M. incognita. From this study, it is concluded that Phenazine had a greater potential in managing root-knot nematode in vitro.
