Knowledge, attitude and practice of road traffic accidents among car drivers in Majmaa city, Saudi Arabia, 2017-2018

Background: Due to the tremendous development of Al-Majmaah city from a small governorate to a city which, in turn, had increased the road traffic accidents (RTAs) as well as unawareness among population due to insufficient knowledge and lack of alternative transportations, this study aims at evaluating Saudi drivers’ knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding traffic regulations and their deterministic effect on RTAs in Al-Majmaah. Methodology: An analytical cross-sectional study method involved Majmaah city with a population of 133 thousand people. Social media websites, mainly Twitter, was used to identify the KAP regarding traffic regulations among the concerned society. Results: The results from the 157 participants showed that the most preventable age groups for RTAs were between 21 to 30 years. Around 69.4% of the participants owned a car with 90.5% having a driver’s license, 56.1% of the respondents had good knowledge, 38.9% had moderate knowledge and 5.1% had poor knowledge about driving and traffic signs. On the other hand, 87.9% of the individuals had a poor attitude toward safe driving, 12.1% have moderate attitude, and 0% have a good attitude. Concerning practice, we find that 52.9% of the individuals had poor practice, 44.6% moderate practice and 2.5% with good practice. Finally, there was a significant difference (at α = 0.05) between the opinion of sample individuals about sample individual’s practices while driving according to age, educational level, financial status, and marital. Conclusion: Educated Saudi drivers in Al-Majmaah are less likely to be involved in accidents.
