Energy Efficient Cross Layer Design for Broadcast in Ad hoc Wireless Networks

2007
Power is a precious resource in ad hoc wireless networks due to the limited battery capability. Broadcast is an important operation in ad hoc wireless networks. The broadcast algorithm must be designed carefully to avoid serious contention, collision, and congestion. Contention, collision and congestion of broadcast used up valuable resources in the ad hoc network such as power and bandwidth. Hence, it is important to design energy efficient broadcast algorithm to prolong the life span of ad hoc network and improve the performance for broadcast. Many literatures showed that a rigid layered structure does not work efficiently to preserve energy and broadcast in ad hoc networks. We develop energy efficient cross layer broadcast (CLBA) algorithm which jointly addresses the issues of transmitted power control and dynamic connected dominating set formation to improve performance of broadcasting in Ad hoc network. Simulation studies indicate that compared with flooding and TOP algorithms our algorithm has good performance in terms of reachability, average broadcast latency and energy efficiency.
