After the development of the pharmaceutical industry, herb medicine flourished once again as if it went back to its origins, particularly in developing countries where it represents a valuable source of a large quantity of active principles. The present retrospective descriptive study was aimed at describing the pattern of consumption of natural medications in "General Calixto Garcia" Teaching Clinical and Surgical Hospital from January 2003 to March 2004. The universe of study was bee-derived pharmaceuticals and herb medications that were dispensary-manufactured and purchased from the chemical-pharmaceutical industry during the study period. The data source was the hospital's consumption records. A total of 26 drugs including two bee-derived pharmaceuticals and 15 herb medications that were dispensary-manufactured was examined. It was concluded that the consumption of natural drugs at the hospital in the study period was very varied and unstable, being dispensary-manufactured medications more consumed than those purchased from the industry. The internal route of administration was the most used whereas the percutaneous route was not included in the study. It is recommended to expand the time frame of the study and to perform others about the use of medicines in order to evaluate the prescribing quality. (AU)
