Planning and running major mine clearance operations

1996
The requirement for mine clearance operations is based on the significant number of countries that are contaminated with mines together with the large numbers of mines already laid in the ground. A well run Mine Programme is the key to a successful mine clearance operation. A well coordinated Mines Awareness campaign will probably produce a significant reduction in injuries and fatalities. The effectiveness of a mine clearance operation will be dependent upon a properly defined organised and funded mine programme combined with the will for the programme to succeed. The author discusses the factors involved in setting up a Mines Awareness campaign, a mine survey, and local personnel training in mine clearance.
