SUMMARY Issy AM, Espada EB, Sakata RK, Lanchote VL, Auler Jr JOC,Santos SRCJ - Residual Analgesic Effect of Fentanyl in PatientsUndergoing Myocardial Revascularization with Cardiopulmo-nary Bypass Background and Objectives - In spite of the frequent use ofhigh doses of fentanyl for major surgeries, the correlation of itsresidual plasma concentration to postoperative analgesia de-serves further investigation. This study aimed at evaluating theresidualanalgesiceffectoffentanylinthefirstandsecondpost-operative days of myocardial revascularization, as well asquantifying its concentration. Methods - Participated in this study 11 patients undergoingmyocardial revascularization with cardiopulmonary bypass un-der general anesthesia with 50 µg.kg -1 intravenous fentanyl.Analgesiawasevaluatedbyanumericverbalscaleatmomentszero (extubation), 70 min, 3, 5, 8 and 12 hours in the first day;andmomentszero(24hafterextubation),70min,3,5,8and12hours in second post-operative day. Pain intensity to vigorouscoughandrespiratoryphysicaltherapywasevaluated.Ateverymeasurement, patients were asked about the need for analge-sic complementation. Plasma samples were collected in mo-mentszero(extubation),70min,3,5,8and12hoursduringthefirst and second postoperative days for fentanyl radioimmu-noassay.
