The characterization of the porosity of hydrocarbon reservoirs is a major challenge in the petroleum industry, since the understanding of this important petrophysical property will exert a great influence in the exploratory and exploitative processes. When studying different types of reservoirs, the knowledge of the several types of porosities is extremely relevant, since permeability, a fundamental property in the production and development of hydrocarbon wells, will be affected by the pore arrangement. This paper shows the descriptions of the main reservoirs petrographic thin sections of the Reconcavo Basin, such as the Agua Grande Formation, the Sergi Formation and the Gomo Member, with information on its constituents, roundness, sphericity and porosity type. In addition, this paper addresses a proposal to quantify the porosity in a semi-automatic way, where it aims to estimate porosity by means of thin sections images through the semiautomatic method that uses pixel information, since the petrographic thin sections are usually impregnated by blue resin, highlighting the porosity in a color spectrum that differentiates it from the rock matrix, allowing a simple python programming code to detect, with the aid of an interpreter, the color strip representing the pores.
