MDCT Manifestations of Normal Sigmoid Mesocolon

2015
Objective: To investigate the multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) manifestations of the normal sigmoid mesocolon. Methods: Fifty cases were studied to evaluate the 64-detector computed tomography appearances of the normal sigmoid mesocolon. Results: (1) The inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) and inferior mesenteric vein (IMV) were identified on axial, coronal and sagital MDCT images in 50 cases. The mesenteric vessels of the sigmoid mesocolon showed characteristic wavy appearances as they coursed through the mesenteric fat. (2) The mesenteric lymph nodes were not roundly identified on MDCT. The attenuation of the fat located within the sigmoid mesocolon was ranged from -80Hu to -115Hu. Conclusion: The IMA and IMV can be revealed readily on the MDCT images of normal individuals. Combining the axial, coronal and sagital MDCT images can easily demonstrate the sigmoid mesocolon.
