Eneergy deposition of heavy ions in plasma

The charge state of heavy ions slowing down in plasma is calculated by solving rate equations. Dielectronic recombination is found to be of particular importance. The heavy ions typically run through a sequence of high non-equilibrium charge states which lead to additional range shortening in plasma and strongly enhanced stopping powers in particular at the end of the range.
