Poverty measurement, agrarian crisis in Karnataka and suicidal data

2014
Records show that at least 16632 farmers committed suicide in India since 1997. Suicides in different parts of India have become a nonstop phenomenon and its deep-rooted cause is agrarian crisis. Farmer's movements, globalization scenario and organizational indebtedness, low yield, no control over the prices have driven the farmers to commit suicide. A reworking of agrarian policy is the need of the hour since all state and central government efforts could not stop suicides. A reworking policy aiming at stopping suicides through addressing the prominent issues of agricultural community is essential otherwise; it may envelope the whole India. A rationalistic attitude is also essential in this direction and "how long" we allow the farmers committing suicide becomes an issue.
