The realization of a 1-Bev electron accelerator was made easier by the use of high power klystron amplifiers working under sealed conditions. These four-cavity klystrons produce a peak power of over 20 Mw at a voltage of 240 kv. Their gain is greater than 40 dB's within a 50 Mc/s bandwidth. A high stability klystron oscillator is also described. A long-term service under sealed conditions results from the construction and pumping techniques employed. The accuracy of duplication and the reliability performance under working conditions are analyzed. The stability in performance under the conditions required by the accelerator (power, phase, frequency) is a function of the limits imposed on the variations of the high tension supply. Various design concepts for the production of higher performance klystrons are outlined. (auth)
