A compound having the formula HO-T-NRPG wherein -T- is one of the following structures: Formula ** ** or an optical isomer, diastereomer or enantiomer thereof, in which: (A) indicates where T binds to NRPG group; (B) indicates where T is joined to OH group; PG is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and a protecting group for a selected amine functional group of the group consisting of phthalimido, trichloroacetyl, benzyloxycarbonyl, tert-butoxycarbonyl, adamantyloxycarbonyl, allyloxycarbonyl, 9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl and α, α-dimethyl-3, 5-dimethoxybenzyloxycarbonyl; and R is hydrogen.
