Antibacterial Effect of 47 Chinese Herbal Medicines on Bacterium Aeromonas hydrophila in vitro

The bacteriostatic effects of 47 Chinese herbal medicines including Punica granatum on bacterium Aeromonas hydrophila were detected through diffusion method(punch method),and the minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration(MBC) of 28 Chinese herbs were determined by double dilution method.The results showed that most Chinese herbal medicine extracts,especially P.granatum,had the inhibitory effect on A.hydrophila.The P.granatum showed the maximal inhibitory circle of over 20 mm,and both MIC and MBC of 7.81 mg/mL,followed by Paeonia lactiflora.Except the two species mentioned above,other 26 Chinese herbal medicines,such as Polygonum cuspidatum,had inhibitory effects;and the rest 19 Chinese herbal medicines including Citrus reticulata were found to have resistant to A.hydrophila.Therefore the most effective Chinese herbs against A.hydrophila was P.granatum,which can be applied to control the diseases caused by A.hydrophila.
