ALBUQUERQUE'S MAJOR STREET INTERSECTION VOLUME DATA COLLECTION PROGRAM

1990
An essential element of effective transportation planning and traffic engineering is knowledge of the existing conditions of the roadway system. This knowledge supplies the basis for decisions regarding highway system improvement, improvement priorities, and the staging of improvement implementation. The knowledge of the existing capacity and level of service (LOS) of the elements of the roadway system also supplies a base from which to measure the impact of land development. There has been a relatively rapid and sustained growth in the City of Albuquerque population over the last decade. A manifestation of the Albuquerque population growth has been an even more rapid growth in the traffic volume on the metropolitan highway system. The primary goal of this study is to provide the City with a quantified assessment of the existing operating conditions of approximately 430 signalized intersections under the City's jurisdiction. A major secondary goal of this study is to develop and implement a database management procedure to maintain an up- to-date assessment of intersection operating conditions in the future.
