Fault Detection and Location in DC Microgrid

DC fault protection is the significant dispute for DC Microgrids over traditional AC power distribution systems. DC Microgrid protection is substantial in order to provide reliable and continuous power supply to the customers. The objective of this proposed work is to detect and locate the fault for fast restoration of the system to normal operation. The proposed protection scheme for DC Microgrid uses Intelligent Electronic Device for detecting and locating the fault. For accurate fault location, the Least Square based estimation technique is used to estimate the fault inductance from which the fault direction will be identified. The fault direction information from the ends of the line segment in the DC ring Microgrid is used to discriminate the internal and external faults. The proposed algorithm is analyzed with different fault conditions and locations in DC Ring Microgrid. The 350V DC Microgrid with ring configuration and its protection schemes are simulated using MATLAB/Simulink environment and the simulation results will be analyzed. The results obtained prove that the proposed method is essential in identifying fault in DC Microgrid and more effective even with high fault resistance values.
