The Application of a Modified Simple Power Law in Turbulent Pipe Flow

1994
An exponential velocity distribution formula for turbulent pipe flow, known as the power law and attributed to Prandtl has been used in the past to model fully developed flow conditions profiles. As part of a research programme completed at the University of Queensland, a modification to the power law was formulated, developed and applied under experimental conditions. This modified simple power law was shown to provide a significantly more accurate representation of the velocity distribution. A method was developed whereby the flow rate carried within a pipe could be accurately determined to within about 1%, based only upon the single measurement of velocity at the centreline.
